The recent elections have shaped the new landscape of our state legislature. The Senate now comprises 34 Republicans and 12 Democrats, with the first GOP filibuster-proof majority since Reconstruction. Only two women remain in the State Senate—both of whom are Democrats. Meanwhile, the composition of the House remains unchanged. Notably, the Freedom Caucus has grown by two members, potentially pushing the GOP caucus further to the right.

In the upcoming legislative session, we anticipate debates on several key issues. There is a strong likelihood of proposals for a total abortion ban; bans on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives; and the expansion of school vouchers. Despite these challenges, we remain hopeful about advancing legislation on healthy school meals for all and paid parental leave, which are crucial for the well-being of our communities.
