Spartanburg, SC -- The Spartanburg County Democratic Party and the Young Democrats of Spartanburg County issued the following statement after the South Carolina legislature passed the restrictive six-week abortion ban, a period which many individuals are not even aware of whether they are pregnant.
“Today, South Carolina, the last safe haven for women seeking abortion healthcare in the Southeast, has been threatened (again) by our Republican legislators who passed an extreme, six-week ban despite the majority of their constituents supporting safe and legal abortion,” said Spartanburg County Democratic Party Chair Kathryn Harvey.
“Abortion is currently legal in South Carolina until 22 weeks of pregnancy, though there are only three clinics in the state and various regulations mean they generally cannot offer abortions beyond the first 12 weeks. At six weeks, most women don’t even know they are pregnant yet. We implore our South Carolina Supreme Court to hold up their original ruling that a six-week ban is unconstitutional. We will never stop fighting for pregnant people to have a choice in this state,” said Harvey.
“This shameful ban puts South Carolinians' lives at risk by barring their access to safe, reproductive care. By this bill passing it is yet another attack on Black women, low-income families, and rural areas who will be disproportionately impacted as there are more than a dozen counties here in South Carolina without an OB/GYN. This bill criminalizes pregnant people, doctors, and healthcare providers. This is undemocratic, it is unpatriotic and simply not right,” said Young Democrats of Spartanburg County Vice Chair China Whitmire.
